Fuel cell ferry - Scotland feasibility study
Transportation, Aug 17 2012 (The Hydrogen Journal)
- Caledonian Maritime Assets Ltd, an operator of 30 ferries operating on the West coast of Scotland and the Clyde Estuary, has been commissioned by Scottish Enterprise to do a feasibility study evaluating fuel cells onboard ferries.
It has put together a consortium with Logan Energy, St Andrews University and Scottish Hydrogen Fuel Cell Association (SHFCA).
The feasibility study will be used to apply for European Union funding for the development of a zero emission ferry which is expected in September 2012.
The idea is that Scotland could establish itself as a centre for design, manufacturing and development of hybrid engines for ferries using fuel cells.
Scottish Enterprise is particularly interested in investigating the feasibility of making the hydrogen from renewable power.
