UK’s first hydrogen ferry wins award
Transportation, Aug  02  2011 (The Hydrogen Journal)

- A planned hydrogen powered ferry service in Bristol, UK, has won an "Environmental Innovation of the Year" award from UK publication Sustainable Shipping.com.

The ferry will run in Bristol harbour from September 2011. The operator, Bristol Hydrogen Boats, is a consortium formed between No 7 Boat Trips, the Bristol Packet, and Auriga Energy Ltd, and supported by Bristol City Council.

It will carry 12 passengers.

Jas Singh, Managing Director of Auriga Energy Ltd and spokesperson for the consortium, said: "We can't express how delighted we are with the Award. This is a great boost for the project so early in the process. Together, we are involved in creating history with the UK's first zero-emissions hydrogen ferry to operate in Brunel's town. This is only the beginning of a great new era of sustainable boat and ship operations."

Bristol Council now wants to find a way to generate hydrogen locally from renewable energy.
