Molybdenum catalyst for hydrogen production at room temperature
Production, Apr  15  2011 (The Hydrogen Journal)

- It is possible to generate hydrogen at room temperature inexpensively using a molybdenum catalyst, according to researchers at Ecole polytechnique fédérale de Lausanne, Switzerland, Laboratory of Inorganic Synthesis and Catalysis.

This is much cheaper than platinum catalysts.

The catalyst tested were amorphous molybdenum sulphides, which are "found abundantly", researchers said.

They are stable and compatible with acidic, neutral or basic conditions in water.

The discovery was made by chance. “It’s a perfect illustration of the famous serendipity principle in fundamental research," said researcher Xile Hu.
