Transportation, Apr  06  2011 (The Hydrogen Journal)

- The first hydrogen fuelling station has opened in Long Island, at Point Lookout.

Representatives from National Grid, Toyota, New York State Energy Research Development Authority (NYSERDA) and GM were present at the launch, along with local dignitaries according to news service Elmont Civic.

The station supplies pure hydrogen, blended hydrogen / compressed natural gas, and compressed natural gas.

The local town, Hempstead, has two Toyota fuel cell vehicles.

The hydrogen / CNG blend will be used for a shuttle bus to carry local senior citizens around.

The purpose of the station is to "demonstrate, evaluate and educate," said Hempstead Supervisor Kate Murray at the opening.

The fuelling station cost $2.2m to build, with contributions from NYSERDA and the National Grid.
