Hydrogen combustion power for heavy duty vehicles paper from Tokyo
Fuel Cells, Nov  18  2010 (The Hydrogen Journal)

- Speakers from Tokyo City University and the Japanese National Traffic Safety and Environmental Laboratory presented a paper at the US Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE) meeting on powertrains fuels and lubricants (Oct 2010), about a development project for a multi-cylinder DISI (Direct Injection Spark Ignition) hydrogen internal combustion engine system for heavy duty vehicles.

The aim of the project is to reduce air pollution (particularly NOx) and reduce emissions of carbon dioxide.

The project team developed high pressure hydrogen injectors, which could work with the 'transient' driving (lots of stop starts).

They developed a combustion control "strategy" which would balance low NOx emissions with high power output.

They evaluated the performance of the whole system and obtained "target output". Overall emissions were lower than those specified in Japan 2009 emission regulations.
