Wärtsilä tests fuel cell running on landfill gas in Finland

- Finland Power systems supplier Wärtsilä reports that it has completed 1,500 hours testing of a solid oxide fuel cell, running on methane rich landfill gas, to generate electricity for domestic use, in Vaasa, Finland.
The fuel cell is supplied by Topsoe Fuel Cell A/S of Denmark.
The unit could operate consistently, although the methane content in the biogas was fluctuating. This was one of the main engineering challenges of the project.
Total electric output was 20kW.
The impurities in the landfill gas, including sulphur, were removed from the fuel before feeding it into the fuel cell system.
