8 fuel cell testers for South African hydrogen project
Fuel Cells, July 29 2009 (The Hydrogen Journal)
- German manufacturer of fuel cell testing equipment FuelCon has sold 8 of its Evaluator C50-LT fuel cell testing units to the University of Cape Town, South Africa, and Mintek, a research council in Johannesburg.
The two South African organisations are involved in South Africa’s National Flagship Project in Hydrogen and Fuel Cell Technologies that was initiated within the frame of the South African Hydrogen and Fuel Cell Technologies Research, Development and Innovation Strategy.
The organisations are establishing a hydrogen catalysis competence centre, focussing on helping South Africa develop as a manufacturing base for PGM (platinum group metals) for use in fuel cells.
South Africa aims to supply 25 per cent of world demand for PGM catalysts for the fuel cell industry by 2020.
It will use the testing equipment to test out its catalysts in different fuel cells, and under different environmental conditions and different voltages.
